Entering the Ancient World

Our mini-geography unit is over so now it is time to enter the Ancient World. This week, we will be getting an introduction to the 8 ancient civilizations we will be studying by looking at a brief summary of each. We will also begin reading the book Ancient Quest, so we know what is going on with that story. Ancient Quest is a book that will help us learn and visualize the ancient world more so than a textbook. Once you enter the Ancient World, your life will never be the same...
Task: Using the Ancient World Link, read about each ancient civilization we will be studying. Post a COMMENT telling me ONE thing about EACH ancient world. You must use COMPLETE sentences. You can post a comment or write your assignment on a piece of paper.
DUE: Sunday, September 8th, 2013. 11:59 p.m.
Points: 20. (2 points for each ancient world (16) and 4 points for getting it done on time.)

Saber tooth cat, wooly mammoth, giant ground sloth were some animals that roamed in the Stone Age. Mesopotamia is known as the Middle East. It means " land between two rivers." Egyptian used the Nile to irrigate crops in ancient Egypt . The pyramid is a giant tomb for dead pharaohs . In ancient china we will learn about the Shang, Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasty. The Great Wall of china was built for protection. Home building vastly improved with things like grid format and the drainage system in ancient India . Ancient Greece has Greek mythology like Zues, medusa, Cerberus . In Ancient Rome gladiators fought in the colosseum. Pompeii was a part of Rome destroyed by a volcanic explosion. The medieval times had kings, knights, and castles. The worst part was the Black Death it killed a bunch of people.

I think the mummification is kind of cool a little creepy though and that Egyptians were the first people to irrigate they're crops.
I do enjoy learning about the Greek Gods and what they did.

You may have seens movies based on The Stone Age, but have you noticed that the actors have white teeth? I don't know about you, but i don't think that they would have tooth brushes then.
If you have looked at a map recently, you would have seen that no place by the name Mesopotamia exists anymore. Today, Mesopotamia is known as the Middle East, which includes Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Iran
The next place that we are learning about is Ancient
Egypt.Have you ever heard of the Pyramids? The pyramids look really cool and are very big but did you know that they were actually just tombs?
The ancient Chinese invented many things such as paper, gun powder, and wheel barrow. However, the most important invention The most of the world uses is toilet paper.
Ancient India are the peple who firt started building homes out of stronger material, adding drainage system, garbage system, flat roofs, and constructing homes in a grid format, which made it easier to get around.
Acient Greece is all very interesting, learning about the king of the gods, Zeus, or Medusa who could turn anyone into stone with her glare, or Athena who was born out of Zeus’s forehead as a full grown woman.
A very interesting/scary feature of ancient Rome is Gladiators and their arena, called the Colosseum. Gladiators were all sorts of people, slaves, criminals, or volunteers. They would train endlessly, preparing for their shot in the Colosseum, in which they would fight to the death against other gladiators, animals, or both.
The Medieval Times is full of excitement and danger. Knights, castles, Kings, Queens…it's all here. We will learn about another new religion, Islam. People who believe in Islam are called Muslims and they fought the Christians in a very bloody war called the Crusades.

The Chinese were known for having many inventions and for using logograms for their written language. The Egyptians believed in many different gods and goddesses. Ancient Egypt would not exist without the Nile River. Greece had competitions in music, poetry, drama, and mostly athletics. India had a god named Buddha. Mesopotamia is located between 2 rivers and that is how it got it's name. The people in Rome didn't have good hygiene and it caused diseases. In the Stone Age the people used stones for their tools. One thing from Ancient Egypt is that there are 3 pyramids and it took over 300 thousand workers to build all 3! One thing from Ancient Greece is that the mythical god Zeus, God of the sky, lightning, thunder, law, order, and justice. Father of Gods and men. One thing from Ancient Rome was the largest city in the then known world. It is thought that Rome's population was over 1 million people when the city was at the height of its power. People in Ancient China are very creative, they created something that we use every day, paper. They also invented Tea, Gunpowder, compass, Silk Fabric, and a Earthquake Detector. People in Ancient India created a Cotton gin, Dock (maritime), Button, Calico, Ruler, and Carding Devices. People from Mesopotamia created the wheel, cuneiform, arithmetic and geometry, irrigation systems, sailboats, lunisolar calendar, bronze, leather, saws, chisels, hammers, braces, bits, nails, pins, rings, hoes, axes, knives, lancepoints, arrowheads, swords, glue, daggers, waterskins, bags, harnesses, armor, quivers, scabbards, boots, sandal (footwear), harpoons, and bee
