Hello, Australia!

Water for Sixth Grade would like to welcome our new friends from Australia. We are very excited about this new connection. The wonderful thing about the Internet is that is can bring the world into the classroom, which is what the goal of this project is. We want to learn about this amazing world by talking to students in other countries, not just by reading a book. It is far more fascinating learning from you.
Please answer the questions below. Click "comment" to leave your answers in the pop-up box. Simply check the "name" box and write your first name. Do not enter a URL address. Thank you very much.

1. What is a typical school day like in Australia? (how many classes do you have, do you switch teachers, what types of classes do you have, etc. Anything about your school day.)

2. What do you do for fun in your free time?

3. What type of food do you eat? What are popular foods in your country?

4. What is the weather like in Australia?

5. What type of clothing do you wear?

6. What Holidays do you celebrate?

7. Share anything else about your country that you want.

Good day mates! I would loveee to go to Australia and see the Great Barrier Reef, and all the wildlife in your continent! Kangaroos are the most *awesomest* animal alive, as well as the platypus! I'm very anxious to learn more about your continent and other things. Thanks for the ear, and thanks for commenting...

Australia is known as the country downunder. It is a beautiful country with unique Australian fauna and flora. The Kangaroo, Koala and Platypus are gorgeous animals. The great barrier reef is spectacular!

Now for the answers to all your questions:

1. Our school day starts at 9am and we finish school at 3pm. we have to wear a uniform to school.Primary classes have the same teacher for most of the day. We go the library each week for a lesson with our librarian. We study Indonesian or Greek and have a different teacher for those subjects. Our Indonesian teacher is also our science teacher. We have two breaks during the school day. Recess(little lunch)at 11.10-11.30 and Lunch at 1.00-1.55. We also have capa(creative and performing arts)we break up into groups every thursday and do either, greek dancing, ballroom dancing, choir, singing, hip hop dancing, recorder or drama. Some of these groups rotate during the school year. Our school year starts at the end of January and finishes in December. We have 4 terms of 10-11 weeks each. We are in first term an our holidays start on the 10th-28th April for easter and autumn break. We have a winter holiday in July. A spring holiday in Sept/Oct and break up for Summer holidays in Dec.

2. In our free time we play sport if we belong to a sporting club we usually train during the week after school and then play a competitive game with other teams. The sports that are popular in Australia are; Rugby league, Soccer, oztag and Netball. Some children belong to dance groups, ballet, jazz etc. Electronic games are especially popular with boys such as playstation etc. Most children play online games and love to chat on msn.

3.We are a multicultural country, so most of the children here come from all over the world. We have restaurants that represent these counries so there is a huge variety of food available. Most children like meat pies, sausage rolls, pizza and hamburgers. Chinese and Thai food is very popular in Australia. Kangaroo meat is becoming more popular and is served in many restaurants. Seafood such as crabs, lobsters, oysters, fish and prawns is fresh and always availble. We eat lamingtons, tim tams, chicken nuggets and vegemite. We don't have a cafeteria at school just a tuckshop which serves fruit, sandwiches, crisps, drinks, icecream and sandwiches.

4. The weather here is usually mild especially in Sydney. Sometimes it can become a little unpredictable it might start off hot and change suddenly to rain and wind in the afternoon. The weather in the Northern part of Australia is very hot in Summer and they have warm winters.

5.We wear a uniform to school every girl has to wear a dress or a pair of shorts with a t-shirt. Boys wear shorts and a t-shirt.Everyone wears black shoes. On special days at school we can wear mufti(casual clothing)

6.We celebrate Australia Day 26th January, Anzac Day 25th April,Chinese New Year,Easter,Christmas,Remembrance day and Queen's birthday 7th june

7.We love the beach, sports, live for holidays and weekends. Enjoy camping holidays especially at Easter time.Fast food is popular mcdonalds, pizza hut, kfc, crispy cremes, subway etc.Music and Food festivals are also popular.
